Back of WWII Jeep
The can strapped to the back of the Jeep was a German design.  It was discovered and copied by the British Army during the WWII Battle of North Africa.  They named it the "Jerry Can."  The British shared this discovery with the Americans.

The five gallon can extended the range of the Jeep by providing an extra fuel supply.  The Jerry Can was also used for potable water, coffee, soup, etc.  A City Birds digital photo.
