Veterans at San Francisco National Cemetery.  A City Birds digital photo.
The markers of our heroes provide a lot of history to think about.  Our National Cemeteries, as well as local cemeteries throughout the land, provide an opportunity to reflect on the true cost of war and to mingle among the heroes who paid the price for those wars.

Sergeant Major Commings is neighbor to Private Lendell Hall at San Francisco National Cemetery.

Sgt. Major Commings, born in 1874, was a career soldier.  He was 28 years old when the Spanish American War started.  He retired from the Army and lived a long life.

Private Lendell Hall was not as fortunate.  Born in 1932, he died at the age of 18 while serving with the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War.  A City Birds digital photo.
