Diorama at Mission Dolores, San Francisco

This diorama is located in the courtyard separating the Mission Church and the Basilica.  It was created for the 1939 World's Fair on Treasure Island on San Francisco Bay.

Some of the things seen on the diorama are the San Francisco Hills; Native Americans (Ohlone Indians) looking at the Spanish sailing ship "San Carlos" sailing in through the Golden Gate.

Left to right the ship's sails read "Rey", Spanish for King (Service to the King); "Dios", Spanish for God; "Pueblo", Spanish for town, village or settlement; and "Muerte", Spanish for Death.  Interestingly, on the far right sail and printed at a 90 degree angle are the Spanish words "¿Quien Sabe?" which literally means "Who do you know?" -- a bit mysterious.

Notice the birds in the diorama -- especially the Brown Pelican flying along side the ship.  The Ohlones are gone, but the Brown Pelicans are still to be found here.
