Scenes of Japan -- From Kyoto to Nara
August 8, 2011 -- This post features scenes of Kyoto and Nara Japan. The two cities are in neighboring prefectures. Kyoto at around 1.5 million people is the larger of the two cities, with Nara having around 350,000 people.
Both cities are renowned for their exquisite Buddhist temples and shrines. Perhaps because Nara is the smaller of the two cities, it enjoys a natural life not found in many places. The deer of Nara are free to roam. Their behavior among humans is akin to that found with Pigeons in many of the world's cities.
The first 15 pictures are scenes of Kyoto and the remaining 15 pictures are scenes of Nara. In Nara, during November, a ceremony is held on behalf of five year old boys and three and seven year old girls. The ceremony, held at the Buddhist shrines and temples, is called the shichi-go-san (7-5-3) ceremony. The children usually dress up in kimonos or Sunday best.
